Guidelines for Bar Briefs Newsletter Submissions
All submissions for the Bar Briefs must include an indication by the submitter of which section of the Bar Briefs they want to be included in. The following is the current list of those sections, and a general statement of what sorts of materials belong in each section. Please respond with the section you believe your submission belongs in. To better understand the general parameters of the different sections, click here to see past issues.
Keep in mind that your submission will not be processed for use in Bar Briefs until you have made a clear response no later than the 15th of the month before publication.
Sections:
a. President's Statement [for the exclusive use of the President]
b. Bar Administrator News [for the exclusive use of the Bar Administrator, though in her discretion she could choose to incorporate appropriate input from submitters here]
c. Membership News [where we place announcements such as new law office openings, personal events such as birth of lawyers' children or retirement; event announcements such as luncheons, CLEs, and law conferences]
d. Awards & Recognitions [where we place announcements of special achievements of lawyers in the profession, such as elections to national, state or local political or Bar office, awards for professional or community service, and similarly-themed news]
e. Official reports [news messages from legal authority figures such as letter from Bar Councilor, message from NC Bar Association President, and similar]
f. Articles [catch-all category where submissions must meet all these criteria:
i. does not include anything better befitting the sections above;
ii. is not an advertisement, information tending to drive traffic toward a particular provider of goods/services/processes, or otherwise commercial in nature [narrow exception: an article by a lawyer that enlightens lawyers about an area of law in which s/he practices but does not tout his/her firm or services other than to briefly introduce him/her in the manner of "The author is an attorney with Doe & Smith, specializing in family law" does not violate this prohibition]
iii. does have the tendency to educate lawyers on topics that are law-related or of general interest to lawyers,
iv. comes from a source having established credibility as a source of accurate, timely information of benefit to a significant segment of the legal profession].
g. Classified ads [typical classifieds content, such as space for lease, help wanted/job wanted, law-related items for sale, seeking one-time hard-to-find items like the last will & testament of Jane Doe }, lawyers' vacation homes for rent]
Note that Bar Briefs is not a space for posting recurring or official legal notices.
